Scientific Illustration is the art of reproducing a 3-dimensional object on either a 2-dimensional surface or with a 3-dimensional medium, showing high realism in the work. Using just the human eyes and hands one renders an object showing scientific accuracy combined with a high sense of artistic knowledge and skill of the medium being used. This type of work serves a number of industries: publishing; medical; research; commercial art; natural sciences and more. Many artists in this field have moved into producing their work in a digital format, as all of the above industries have moved in that direction for publication purposes. I have chosen to continue with the age-old approach, that is, my own hands and eyes moving the pencil, pen or brush across the page.
I received my training, specifically in Natural Science Illustration, from the University of California at Santa Cruz’s Scientific Illustration Program. I prefer to render flora and fauna from life, as opposed to perhaps rendering a surgical procedure or the internal anatomy of a cockroach (yes, I’ve actually done this!). I like putting myself in the habitat of the animals and plants that I sketch and drawing them as they are living. Not only do I get to see such beautiful creatures or interesting plants from this, but I also learn a great deal about the environment I’m in. I am passionate about this topic just as much as the actual drawings that I produce.
I work as a freelance artist producing works for publications of all sorts. |
